Forests in Oregon Being Protected!

August 7th, 2009 | Posted by: brandon

I learned this morning that the Bush administration’s plan to clear cut old growth forests in Oregon has now been overturned by the Obama administration. It’s great to see things happening that are promoting conservation and preservation of the wilderness that we have left and the resources that we have left. (Now for Alaska!) Here is a quote from a press release on the issue:

From the Secretary of the Interior Salazar:

Because the previous Administration failed to follow established administrative procedure before leaving office, its plan to intensify logging in western Oregon — known as the Western Oregon Plan Revisions (WOPR) — is legally indefensible and must be withdrawn, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said today. Moreover, Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks Thomas Strickland said that the federal government will ask the District Court to vacate the Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2008 revision of the critical habitat for the spotted owl, on which the WOPR was in part based, because Interior’s Inspector General determined that the decisionmaking process for the owl’s recovery plan was potentially jeopardized by improper political influence.

Great job Obama administration. We are excited to have these forests to enjoy for years to come! You can read more about this at the Care2Action site.

  1. Obviously You do not know much about the Pacific Northwest!

This is the third time the state has been completely clear cut to its benefit.
    Clear cutting stops erosion.
Kills Borer beetles that contributed to the Biscuit Fire that was one of the worst in Oregon’s History.

    Oregon erosion is unbelievable!
At as much as 100 inches per year the clear cutting method places hundreds of tonnage of soil up on the mountains making new root structures and saving streams.

Clear cutting may look ugly to the tourist, but for those that live there it is the safest way to keep homes safe from mud slides.

Th Obama Administration has no business involving itself with state issues. Just as the Bush Administration didn’t either.

So if you want the truth there you have it, I lived in Oregon, in one of the wettest areas and know just how much that clear cutting saved the areas.

It benefits wildlife especially the spotted owl because they moved to new growth. It promotes mother trees opens grazing lands and reduces harmful creatures such as nutria.

    Thank You

Thank you for your honest response to my post. It’s the first time that I’ve heard someone from the area respond to the issue, and it is very eye opening indeed. I’d love to learn more about this. Do you have any info/links to share in response?
