March 12th, 2010 | Posted by: brandonHave you ever had the thought that your boss is not a good leader, but that they just boss you around? Better yet, have you ever had the thought that maybe you aren’t a good leader, but just bossy? Maybe people follow you because they are afraid, not because you lead well. I found this quote online and wanted to share it with everyone. It compares leadership to “bossiness”: Read the rest of this entry »

Is There Really No Such Thing as Work Life Balance?
December 16th, 2008 | Posted by: brandonAn interesting article on the Craving Balance Blog:
“James clearly hit a nerve last week with his post on balancing work and work. Participating in the landscape of raucous comments (60-something and counting), I nearly jumped out of my chair when I read one reader’s comment:
“I am my business.”
This comment made me realize that I work as an expert in a field that doesn’t exist. You see, there’s no such thing as work-life balance. There’s no such thing as work-work balance. Everything in our lives is in constant movement and continuous flow.
Let’s just say that if you’re in balance, you’re dead.

Now…I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that. You need to have balance. We can’t throw away our individual self and become absorbed with business. That is what I have been writing about in these global village articles. However, I do agree that we are in constant movement and finding a good flow through which we can channel personal life and business at the same time is important.

The Heart of What We Do as Adventure Professionals
November 21st, 2008 | Posted by: brandonOver at the “Facilitator’s Corner Blog” at OutdoorEd.com, Jim Grout of High 5 Adventure wrote an posting about how the outdoor adventure and experiential education industry has more and more regulations imposed upon it every year. He was encouraging professionals in the industry to remember “that the essence of what we do as adventure educators is to provide people with a powerful learning experience that is engaging, challenging, thought provoking, and fun.”
It is so important to remember that the reason Ascent Adventure Consultants exists is to provide this very type of experience for all of our participants on adventures and training courses. As soon as we lose this focus, our courses will be less meaningful and effective. Our commitment to all of our clients is to continue to provide engaging, challenging, thought provoking, and fun adventures and training programs. It is through this type of adventure and guiding that lives are changed.
